Home Escape Planning Sheet
Use the grid below to draw a floor plan of your home, marking all the doors and windows. In your drawing, label each sleeping area and other important rooms. If you have sleeping areas on more than one floor, use one planning grid for each floor. Draw arrows marking two ways out of each room, especially each sleeping area. Indicate a meeting point outside your home.
Answer the following questions with your family.
- Can escape doors and windows for each sleeping area be easily opened by the person who sleeps there?
- If everyone follows the plan, is each person capable of escaping on his own?
- Are there plans to assist older adults, the infirm, or small children?
- How would you notify the fire department?
- Does everyone understand the escape routes and know the location of the meeting point?
- If you live in a building with an elevator, do you have two exit routes by stairwell?
- Does everyone know not to take the elevator?
