Burn Prevention And First Aid
- Anything that gets hot can cause a burn--toasters, ovens, irons, matches, lighters, hot water, heaters, or the sun.
- Immediate treatment of burns is crucial.
- Cool the burn with cool water for 10-15 minutes; then, cover it loosely with a bandage.
- A burn that is red, blistered, white, or charred should be cooled with water. Seek medical treatment immediately.
- Never put butter, ointment, or any other form of grease on a burn.
- While cooking, avoid wearing loose clothing, and roll up long sleeves.
- Turn pot handles toward the middle of the stove to prevent possible scalding from spills of hot liquids.
- Use long oven mitts when handling hot pots and pans.
- When you are bathing children, always be sure to test the water temperature first. Never leave children unattended in the tub.
- Should your clothes catch fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL; then COOL the burn and CALL for help.
