Projects

We would like to find volunteers to perform the following tasks:

Data Entry
The Fire Department uses Firehouse software for incident reports, hydrant records and firefighter training records. Volunteers can input this information on a regular basis.
Administrative
There are many administrative tasks that can be performed. Most are individual projects such as creating maps and a map index and keeping asset distribution or service area information. Many of these projects require periodic (usually annual) updating. Volunteers can implement the projects and ensure they are kept up to date.
Safety House
The Safety House is a facility used to teach fire and hurricane safety to all age groups, from children to seniors. Volunteers can be trained to run the Safety House at festivals, schools and other locations.
Fire Safety and Prevention Education
Volunteers can visit schools and other civic groups to help increase awareness of fire safety and prevention in the community.
Special Projects
One example of a special project is the File of Life program. Volunteers can assist with fundraising to purchase the information packets as well as the distribution of the packets. As the Fire Corps expands, there may be further special projects that volunteers can undertake.
Fundraising
In addition to fundraising for special projects such as the File of Life program, volunteers can assist in general fundraising. In 2005 The Thistle Golf Club hosted a golf tournament to benefit the Fire Department. Volunteers could assist with this event in the future in a number of ways.
Third Monday Firefighter Training Dinners
We would like to start a program to provide dinner for the firefighters, once per month, on their regular training night. Volunteers will prepare dinner for the firefighters and serve it at Station 1. They will be reimbursed for the cost of the food.
Incident Reporting
Volunteers may be able to assist the department during incidents by performing the written documentation of the incident.
Firefighter Rehabilitation
During major incidents, firefighters are rotated away from the front lines periodically for rest and rehabilitation. Fire Corps volunteers can assist by providing drinks and food for firefighters. EMS personnel are also on standby to provide any medical assistance to firefighters. As part of this it would be helpful to create a manual of all the possible places where food and drink could be purchased, particularly for overnight incidents.
Fire Hydrant Testing
Volunteers can perform biannual testing of fire hydrants, recording necessary flow and pressure information for input into the Firehouse software.
